Brian Stanback

Principal Software Engineer

As a Principal Software Engineer and technical co-founder, my responsibilities extend beyond just coding; I help shape architectural direction across our development initiatives, lead complex and high-risk technical projects, and work closely with our engineering team to ship new features.

My journey

My tech journey kicked off with a B.S. in Computer Science from Colorado State University in 2009. Early in my career at Renewable Choice Energy, I developed sales tools and Salesforce pipelines, quickly moving to lead a new SaaS platform at Mosaic Sustainability. This platform was pivotal in calculating the greenhouse gas footprint for Fortune 500 companies. My entrepreneurial spirit led me to co-found ventures in Salesforce applications and aerial drone photography between 2009-2012. In 2013, inspired by my partner Michelle, I made the pivotal decision to move to California, a move that not only marked a new chapter in my personal life but also kickstarted my rewarding journey with Demand.io. Here, I transitioned from B2B-focused development to crafting consumer-facing technologies. Over a decade, my journey at Demand.io has been characterized by growth, innovation, and the continuous evolution of my technical and leadership skills.

Why I choose to work here every day.

I strive to make a significant impact through my work at Demand.io by driving technological innovation and ensuring the development of products that genuinely meet the needs of our users. My goal is to empower our communities - shoppers, brands, and influencers - by creating a seamless experience. This involves leveraging best-in-class technologies and methods to enhance user engagement and satisfaction. My impact is measured by the success of our platforms in empowering users to save money and by the positive feedback from our community, which motivates me each and every day.

3 things I go all in for.

1

Cycling and the Outdoors

While my passion for technology and keeping up with new developments and trends runs deep, I equally treasure the times I can step away and immerse myself in nature. Cycling and venturing into the outdoors serve as the perfect counterpoint to my daily tech immersion. Whether facing the challenge of a rigorous bike ride or the tranquility of a quiet hike, these moments of peace allow me to step back into my technological pursuits refreshed, with a renewed perspective and energy.

2

Cooking

Beyond my tech interests, cooking is my humble attempt at creativity. There's an oddly satisfying challenge in experimenting with flavors and techniques to bring a dish together - often with mixed results. It's a journey of discovery and hopeful mastery, not unlike software development, but with the added risk of burning dinner instead of just bugs. Sharing my culinary attempts with loved ones adds joy and camaraderie, even if it sometimes means ordering pizza as a backup.

3

Parenthood

Stepping into the role of a parent has been like booting up a complex new program without any documentation - transformative, bewildering, and the best kind of chaos. It's a journey packed with unexpected joys, diaper mishaps, and on-the-fly learning. Seeing the world through her eyes is like experiencing a series of delightful bugs and features, each discovery more fascinating than the last. Parenthood is essentially being enrolled in an advanced course in patience, resilience, and the magic of nurturing a tiny human who’s as curious and spirited as any startup founder. It's a wild ride, and I wouldn't trade my seat for anything.
